Dr. Mas Takashima, clinical faculty member of the sleep medicine fellowship program at Baylor College of Medicine, has seen success with a new technique to reduce or stop snoring called the pillar procedure. "The most appealing part of the procedure is that no surgery is required and it is a simple procedure which is done in the office," said Takashima, assistant professor of otolaryngology at BCM. "Before, the only real way to stop snoring involved surgically removing or treating portions of the soft tissue from the back of the throat." Snoring is usually caused when soft tissue in the throat vibrates as a person breaths while sleeping.
